What to Wear: Met Museum of Art Costume Institute Gala
Posted By: KK on 05/4/12 12:12 PM | Categories: What to Wear
The Metropolitan Museum Spring 2012 Costume Institute Gala is the most exciting night in fashion in the city. This year’s Gala celebrates the exhibition, Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations, explores the striking affinities between Elsa Schiaparelli and Miuccia Prada, two Italian designers from different eras. The evening begins in the gallery, where iconic ensembles will be presented with videos of simulated conversations between Schiaparelli and Prada directed by Baz Luhrmann, focusing on how both women explore similar themes in their work through very different approaches. Our finely tuned focus, is what to wear to this extraordinary event where fashion, celebrity and industry combines to creates excitement beyond compare. This magnificent Marchesa Couture Beaded Gown, with its golden beaded embroidery adorned bodice over the cream silk organza, floor-sweeping skirt, was brilliantly designed for Red Carpet glamor. The Jose & Maria Barrera pave crystal jewels, Judith Leiber Minaudiere and Jimmy Choo sandals enhance the elegance of this stunning ensemble.
SHOP NOW: Marchesa Couture Beaded Bodice Gown ($6950), Jose & Maria Barrera Crystal Imperial Drop Earrings ($440), Jose & Maria Barrera Pave-Crystal Bracelet ($525), Judith Leiber Slide Lock Minaudiere ($1995), Jimmy Choo Dollis Crisscross Platform Sandal ($850)
Schiaparelli, who worked in Paris from the 1920s until her house closed in 1954, was closely associated with the Surrealist movement and created such iconic pieces as the “Tear” dress, the “Shoe” hat, and the “Bug” necklace. Prada, who holds a degree in political science, took over her family’s Milan-based business in 1978, and focuses on fashion that reflects the eclectic nature of Postmodernism.

What to Wear: Eco Fashion?
Posted By: KK on 04/23/12 10:11 AM | Categories: What to Wear
The terminology related to “Eco Friendly” can be confusing these days. What exactly does Eco Fashion even mean? We asked our friend and environmentalist Mareill Kiernan to help us sort out the differences and terminologies.
1. Vegan & Cruelty free Fashion. This is a platform that is becoming very popular and supported by designers such as Stella McCartney and Cornelia Guest. Companies and designers that support vegan fashion only sell animal-friendly, cruelty-free products that contain no animal ingredients, such as wool, fur, leather or even silk (unless it’s peace silk), nor are they tested on animals. Stella McCartney’s cruelty-free fashion message stretches from her covetable handbags to the tips of her vegan high heels. You only live once. And what is it that you leave behind as a business person? Is it just some great handbags and a nice pair of shoes, or is it actually that and a conscious business? stated McCartney. Stella is one of our favorite go-to designers for every season and you simply cannot go wrong with her classic styles in fun patterns and colors.
3 of our favorites from Stella McCartney available at Net-A-Porter
SHOP NOW: Stella McCartney Lace Top ($1495), Stella McCartney Striped Cotton-seersucker Tapered Pants ($895), Stella McCartney Faux Patent-Leather Slingbacks ($645)
Cornelia Guest currently designs a collection of animal-friendly purses, “humane handbags”, made with a vegan alternative to leather which is available at Bloomingdales. They come in various styles and colors.
SHOP NOW: Cornelia Guest Crossbody Peri Weave ($145), Cornelia Guest Satchel Remi Weave ($240)
2. Recycled & Sustainably Made Fashion. These are products that contain re-spun fibers spun from old fabrics used to make new clothing and accessories. Transforming 100% recycled sterling silver into their signature sculptural pieces has been the foundation of SLANE‘s fine jewelry collection since the bi-coastal sisters, Landon & Heath Slane, started in 1995. Hand-assembled, hand-set, and hand-finished – consideration is given in all aspects of the business to the use of environmentally friendly materials. Additionally, all printing and packing supplies are partially or fully recycled and recyclable. SLANE pieces are available in fine jewelry stores around the country and at www.slane.com.
BUY NOW: Twin Link Leather Bracelet ($290), Twin Link Natural Leather Necklace ($400), Set of 3 Column Oval Bangles ($495)
3. Organic Fashion. In order for products to be correctly classified as “organic” this means that they are made using only organically grown fabrics. Organically grown means plants sown without herbicides or any other toxic additives being used. The fabrics should come from a green farm or place that has been documented as being a green manufacturing company. H&M‘s eco-friendly “Conscious Collection” hit stores April 12th bringing with it the brand’s greenest line of clothing yet. Oscar nominees Michelle Williams and Viola Davis have already worn dresses from the collection on various red carpets — which isn’t surprising considering the pieces’ high level of quality, design, and construction. The collection includes a number of dramatic floor-length gowns in on-trend silhouettes, with pops of neon and floral prints. H&M’s annual sustainability report from 2011, which was released earlier today, bills H&M as the world’s largest user of organic cotton.
From Daytime to Black Tie, The H&M Collection covers it all!

What to Wear: Inspired by the Baby Giraffe
Posted By: KK on 04/20/12 7:22 AM | Categories: What to Wear
Is there a better way to spend Earth Day 2012, then outdoors at the Bronx Zoo, viewing the 6′ tall “baby” giraffe? “The new baby baringo giraffe at the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Bronx Zoo is now on full display, doing cute things like chasing butterflies and being embarrassed by its enormous mom. So even though it was born 6 feet tall and weighed 100 pounds, it’s just like other babies! Eventually the calf will grow to be 16 feet tall and weigh about 2,600 pounds.” Huffington Post
The fab pattern of the giraffe has inspired designers for centuries. Here are a few of our current faves.

What to Wear: Graduate with DVF
Posted By: KK on 04/17/12 4:35 PM | Categories: What to Wear
Graduations are just around the corner, so of course, we’ve been inundated with requests for what to wear. Whether in town or country, here are some great options from Diane von Furstenberg for the graduation guest. We love this simple sheath dress made of cotton blend that ensures you looking crisp all day. The signature DVF wrap is so flattering on every body type and this silk trio is the perfect choice to take you straight from day to the night festivities. Remember to check the weather and plan accordingly. But whatever the Alma Mater, bring a wrap or cardigan for breezy shady spots and over=zealous air conditioning, and sunglasses and a hat to protect you from the sun.. Your shoes should be easy to maneuver in, particularly in grass, which makes a wedge the perfect choice for the ceremony. Last but not least, a roomy handbag is essential to fit your camera, water, and program. To see our selection of hats, visit our Spring and Summer Hats.
